The weather has warmed up here (at least it is trying to), and the dandelions are starting to blossom on our front lawn. The bright yellow flowers stick out against the somewhat green grass and my boys are instantly drawn to them. I see them and think about how we need weed killer and need to dig out the roots as we begin our yearly battle against the weeds.
Today, the boys ran straight for the dandelions and began to pluck the floral heads off and presented them to me with big smiles and a, “Here Mommy! For you!” The weeds that have begun to try and take over my front lawn are now being presented as a gift. To my boys, they are a flower and all Mommies deserve flowers. Before I knew it, my hands were full of bright little yellow dandelion heads and the sticky juices from their stems was collecting on the palm of my hands.
I smiled as they continued to gather more and more dandelions and thanked them as they continued to pile them into my hands. Lyan had been taking his time collecting several in his little two year old hands and as his brothers finally made their way into the house, he finished collecting them walked over to me with his flowers. “Here, Mommy!” he said as he placed the dandelions in my hands. “Here, Mommy. Garbage.”
