Family dinner is something all parents can relate to. How do I get my kids to eat their food? With the new season of Survivor beginning February 17, we couldn’t help but make a little parody video with a family twist.
Read below to find out more about the video.
I am a big fan of Survivor. I have watched the show since the first season and while some seasons are a blur due to how hectic life was during certain months, I have always enjoyed watching the scheming and of course, rooting for my favourite player.
The idea for the Family Dinner Reward Challenge video came to me as I was watching the show last season. I was thinking how it would be fun to do a parody of Survivor and get the kids involved but since we were trying to move, there was no time in our schedule. Then there was the whole part about figuring out what the topic would be about. It couldn’t be about kids climbing on playground equipment, which would be a convenient set up for a physical challenge. There wasn’t enough material there for that to be the solution. No, it had to be something to do with every day life that parents and kids could relate to.
Family Dinner Can Be A Challenge
Every parent knows family dinners can often be a struggle. Kids can be picky at mealtime and some kids are slower to finish their meal than others. It is the perfect set up for a Survivor spoof because we have the “course” set up being the table and the meal itself being the challenge. I couldn’t ask for anything better. The next thing we needed was the players.
How Did We Get The Kids Involved?
With any video involving the kids, I need their buy-in. I let them choose to be included or refuse. They all wanted to participate. Perfect! We were off to a great start. I started by showing the kids a couple of clips of Survivor Reward Challenges on YouTube. They needed to know exactly what we were trying to accomplish, otherwise I knew they would be wondering what on earth we were asking them to do. My kids aren’t actors and any examples are helpful for them.
We shot the video in one day, filming all the footage with the kids first and then all my lines later. There were several laughs during the dinner scene. They were able to eat and stop. Plates had to be topped back up with mac and cheese as some were a little too fast with their eating.
Poor Lyan missed the part where we told him the early bedtime was pretend. While we were filming with him we explained what was going to happen and told him just to walk away looking at his floor. When I told him to go to bed, he instantly forgot and his cry was genuine. I felt bad. The poor little guy. We made it up to him after two more takes and chocolate. We had to use that take though. His reaction was priceless.
So that is the story behind our Family Dinner Reward Challenge video. Now it is time to wait for another great season of Survivor.
